Jacksonville dancers got sick and tired of being thrown out of
places to dance because we don't drink enough or stay out late enough
to provide the profits needed by a business.
Michael Payne, Bill Maddox, and Dave Jordan got the ball rolling
and kept it going. We collected $1,000 from a bunch of dancers,
found a place, found out how to make it work according to booze
and zoning laws, and went to work.
Jimmy Koff (Chairman of the Boards) and Scott Jackson built the
1300 sq. ft. dance floor, and it is a beauty! All the club paid
for was the material. These two guys plus Ron Combs did all of our
carpentry work for just the price of materials. This included the
DJ booth, and all the framing for the bathrooms! All labor was donated.
Bryan Thomas did all of our electric work for just the cost of
materials. This included outside lighting, 16 ceiling fans and lights,
all fire required emergency lighting etc.
Sue Jordan was the chair of the decorations committee and she was
very imaginative. We have 3-D murals on three walls and one of them
even has a porch that seats 16 people!
Gloria Travassos and Paulette Abernathy did our dancing art.
Many, many people got involved in the cleaning and painting, and
the work is still going on.
We are situated in a 4500 sq. ft. room with three brand new air
conditioners, and a new roof is going on as we speak. Our landlord
is one of us! Charlie Coleman not only gave us a great rent deal,
he also took off $1000 for the first six months to help us out.
We still have about 9000 sq. ft. of expansion room to use!
